In this lunch and learn, Jon Ward talks of two critical aspects of tackling Agile in a PMO.
- How does a PMO act with autonomous, Self-Managing Agile Teams, and
- What are the implications on the PMO of Continuous Improvement in the Agile Teams?
In today’s fast-paced and dynamic business environment, the nature of agile teams has become increasingly important. Agile teams are self-managing, operating within defined parameters while controlling what they do and who does it. Self-management in the workplace is not just an emerging trend or a new HR fad; it is a proven way of working that has revolutionised businesses for decades. If your organisation is implementing Agile, they will be considering self-management. This approach empowers team members to take ownership of their work and make decisions collaboratively.
This approach has implications for how the PMO operates and interacts with teams. The language and behaviour used by the PMO must respect the status of an empowered agile team. For example, monitoring delivery performance is a key responsibility of many PMOs. To maintain the team’s autonomy, we recommend utilising data-driven insights but the metrics used by Agile Teams are different to traditional teams.
Many PMOs have established project methods which work for their organisation and consider that their job is done. But how does this stance recognise the Agile principle of Continuous Improvement?
One aspect of organisational agility is delivering technology and process change quickly and efficiently – using the PMO’s project framework. Applying governance is crucial in the Agile PMO model. PMOs must establish clear agile guidelines while fostering the accountability and responsibility for delivery that exists in the teams.
To achieve the agility required, many organisations have started transforming their project methodologies, seeking more effective means of delivery. However, Agile encourages continuous improvement, so whereas previously, the project framework was the standard. With Agile, it’s now a starting point. Therefore, a PMO must become accustomed to teams adapting the standard and evaluating if their changes are beneficial. How does a PMO act if an “improvement” by a Squad does not have the desired result?
