Certification Body:
Certification: On successful completion of the course and examination, course delegates will be certified as Essentials for PMO Directors™ accredited.
Pre-Requisites:
The following pre-requisites are applicable for this scheme:
- Essentials for PMO Managers certification OR;
- A Practitioner certificate in either P3O®, PRINCE2®, PRAXIS Framework™, AgilePM®, MSP®, PRINCE2 Agile, APM PFQ, PMQ, PM4SD™, PMP®, PgMP®, or CAPM or equivalent OR;
- 3 years’ experience of working within a PMO, project, programme or portfolio environment

Essentials for PMO Directors Training and Certification is aimed at current PMO Directors or PMO Leads, especially those new or moving into this role. The training is also suitable for those aspiring to be PMO Directors and senior Project or Programme Managers moving into a PMO leadership position.
Virtual classroom training takes place with a live instructor throughout the online course and you will be learning alongside other virtual learners – you’ll be able to see and hear them too!

- Practice examination paper
- Examination voucher [find out how it works] (valid for 3 months)
Please note – The PMO Competency Framework and the PMO Service Catalogue: An Insight into what PMOs do are included in the price. If you’re based outside of the UK, this can take up to three weeks. The course materials are sufficient for you to take the Administrator level exam whilst waiting for book delivery.

- 50 minute duration
- Closed book
- 50% pass mark (25 marks out of 60).
- APMG exams use an online proctoring system which allows you to take your exam anytime. Their ProctorU system, will access your exam as you take it to monitor the exam environment through your computer’s desktop, webcam and microphone.
- Please make sure your computer meets the minimum requirements. To check if you can use the online exam system please run this test before booking the course.
We’ll issue you with a voucher and all you need to do is book your examination time slot. You can choose to do the exam when it suits you – same day or later. There are lots of times available – including in the evening.
You’ll do the exam at your own PC and log in to the testing environment.

In the Essentials for PMO Directors course you will learn:
- The essential knowledge and skills needed to undertake the role of a PMO Director
- How PMOs support project, programme and portfolio management activity
- The four key roles within a PMO and when different types of PMOs are required
- The competencies required to successfully undertake the role of a PMO Director
In the Course
In the course, learners will cover three areas:
- The mission, vision and strategy of PMO
- The levels of P3M maturity and capability
- The different kinds of PMOs
- Developing a PMO Vision
- Designing an Integrated PMO Model
- The knowledge, skills and behaviours required of PMO Directors
- The key responsibilities of PMO Directors
- Applying skills and demonstrating key behaviours
- Delivery Support competences and links to organisational strategy
- Capacity Management – including portfolio resource forecasting; utilisation reporting and resource management
- Capability Management – including mentoring schemes; training and assessment
- Governance Frameworks – including developing terms of references; RASCI matrices; conflicts of governance
- Assurance – including peer reviews; integrated assurance and audit recommendations.
