We asked: “What is your biggest current challenge as a PMO professional?” The most popular response – and one of the most frequently submitted questions was, “What do future PMO roles look like?”
We loved this question – and honestly, we weren’t surprised to see it come out on top.
If you ask five PMO professionals what their future looks like, you’ll probably get six different answers. And that’s the beauty of working in PMO, there are many different types of roles, types of PMO and types of organisations that have them. The PMO of the future won’t be a one-size-fits-all function – it’s not even that now but if we were to put our future goggles on for a minute here’s what we think it could look like.
- More focus on ‘decision support’ – which will mean the data analytics and tech advances will be utilised BUT the role has to include the capability to tell stories with data, not just numbers on a slide.
- Thinking more strategically – where the PMO supports whole systems (think strategy to execution and portfolio management) not just projects or even programmes.
- Specialist roles and new roles – specialists in portfolio prioritisation, business case development, training and development, perhaps specialist roles we don’t even know about today!
- The AI augmented PMO professional, with a AI agent working alongside – frees up the PMO professional to focus on the people based aspects of support – think coach, facilitate, relationship-build, creative thinking, leadership support.
