What are the current PMO training options?

Perhaps the most well known PMO certifications available are the P3O Foundation and P3O Practitioner courses.

The P3O suite are advantageous for anyone working in a PMO – they provide a high level overview of the design, creation and transformation of PMOs. These certifications are more heavily theory focused, and can help delegates demonstrate a greater understanding of Project, Programme and Portfolio Management, demonstrate a better understanding of the different types of PMO, articulate the need for PMOs within an organisation, and even use the P3O functions and services guidance to implement new services or update existing ones within an organisation.

However, these certifications are often more suitable for those working in more senior roles within the PMO, such as that of PMO Manager or Director, who have greater control over the design of ways in which the PMO delivers.

This is where the Essentials for PMO Administrators course differs – the certification focuses on developing the knowledge, skills and competencies required for an individual to competently perform their role.

How is the certification relevant to the PMOs of today?

The Essentials for PMO Administrators certification, developed by the House of PMO, is a redesign of the BCS PPSO Essentials certification. Before being acquired by the House of PMO, this certification was around 20 years old – the new certification has been developed in keeping with the requirements of PMOs of today.

How can the certification help me in my role?

The course is based off the PMO Administrator role profile from the PMO Competency Framework, and so specifically outlines the requirements for those working in Project Support roles.
