📋 Organisations Requirements

A large research facility is undergoing a significant organisational transformation to implement a new operating model, which involves restructuring and redesigning its delivery and PMO functions.

Currently, there are seven PMOs, each with its own distinct goals, structures, services, and resources. Additionally, PMO-related activities are being carried out by individuals who aren’t officially part of these PMOs.

The facility is transitioning to a new PMO structure with plans to develop a hub-and-spoke model based on P3M functions. However, there’s a lack of consistent understanding of the PMO’s role across the organisation, leading to resistance to engage in discussions about the changes. As a result, working in the PMO is not seen as an attractive career option for some.

To address these challenges, the organisation is offering an interactive workshop for 120 individuals to help them understand the role of the PMO and the valuable contributions it makes to the organisation’s success.

We delivered a 1/2 day (3.5 hours) bespoke workshop, based on research best practice (P3O best management practice, and the House of PMO Competency Framework and Service Catalogue), tailored to the context and terminology of the organisation.

A leading drinks manufacturer has an IT PMO which was established in 2017 with the recruitment of a single associate. Since then it has grown steadily in size and maturity as additional members have been added to the team, and offers a range of Project, Programme and Portfolio level services. The PMO now comprises ten PMO professionals, with varying levels of competence.

The current aims of the PMO include;

  • Formalise the concept of a service-based PMO, including establishing the roles of Service Owner, Service Manager, and Service Operatives.
  • Provide appropriate development for everyone within the PMO team.
  • An initial requirement has been identified to increase the knowledge and understanding of a service-based PMO and the purpose of the service management roles.

💡 Our Approach

We delivered a combination of bespoke training, coaching support, and public courses to address the full range of development needs of the team. An initial workshop to develop a shared understanding of PMO Services and service management followed by a workshop for the senior members of the team to understand the key drivers for the design and function of the PMO.

This provided the team with sufficient knowledge to review the current design and function of the PMO, along with the services offered. The final wrap-up session for each workshop identified the next steps to be undertaken by the team. PMO Learning provided ongoing coaching and support to the team as they undertook the review.

A software company has a UK PMO which is established, embedded, and maintains a bespoke Project Playbook to ensure effective and consistent delivery of both in-house and client projects. The head of PMO for the UK has a desire to build a suite of bespoke certified training based on the project playbook and best practice which includes courses for Project Administrators, entry level Project Managers, senior Project Managers and PMO leads.

We delivered four bespoke courses. All courses covered the relevant principles, tools and procedures of the company’s project playbook, supplemented by further project management theory and the company’s core values and behaviours. Exercises were based on a bespoke case study and used the organisation’s project management templates as working examples.

A government administration company had identified the need to establish a shared understanding of governance and assurance best practices and key governance and assurance activities.

This need had arisen due to new members joining the Portfolio Governance and Assurance team, and a desire for the PMOs across the organisation to work more collaboratively.

Our solution was a tailored 1-day training course that addressed the role of the PMO in assurance and governance, effectively linking it to the portfolio’s responsibilities.

To develop the materials required for the session, a trainer consultation took place to ensure they were tailored to the unique requirements faced by the organisation, this involved discussions between a member of our training team and a representative from the PMO to gather the necessary information about specific objectives and desired outcomes. The course was then designed and delivered.

The PMO at a UK council was focused on driving incremental improvements in their P3M maturity. Key initiatives included enhancing the understanding of the Senior Responsible Owner (SRO) and sponsor roles, as well as boosting the skills and competence of SROs across the council. To support these development goals, the council sought to partner with PMO Learning.

We proposed a 1-day face-to-face sponsorship workshop, initially targeting the organisation’s strategic leaders, followed by sessions for the broader director community and PMO members. This workshop was co-developed with the council’s PMO, creating opportunities to share best practices and tailor the content to meet the specific needs of the council.
